This website is dedicated to industries. Its aim is to inform companies about current developments and future R&D needs to get ready before the publication of calls within the Cherenkov Telescope Array consortium.
Design study phase
Definition of the layout of the arrays , specifying telescope types, design of the telescopes and small-scale prototyping.
Preparatory phase
2010 - 2013
Supported by the European Commission
. Prototyping and deployment of full-scale telescopes
. Preparation of the construction and installation
. Solving technical, organisational and legal issues
. Definition of CTA host-sites, in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
. About 150M euros total investment cost
. Some 150 telescopes and 2 sites :
Northern & Southern hemispheres
. Over 800 scientists working in 25 countries
. Construction phase: 2014 - 2018
CTA - Cherenkov Telescope Array is an initiative to build next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray instrument.
It will serve as an open observatory to a wide astrophysics community and will provide a deep insight into the non-thermal high-energy universe.
The aim is to build 2 arrays of telescopes , one at a site in the Northern hemisphere and the other in the Southern hemisphere, for full-sky coverage .
Together they will consist of some 150 telescopes providing scientists with a new view of the universe .
The CTA consortium consists of over 800 scientists working in 25 countries : Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Namibia, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.
Construction phase
2014 - 2018
CTA construction and site infrastructure means a total cost of about 50M€ for CTA-North and 100M€ from which 80M€ remain for CTA-South telescope construction.
